Pharmacology

In anemia, it increases erythrocyte production by promoting nucleic acid synthesis in the bone marrow and by promoting the maturation and division of erythrocytes.

Dosage & Administration of Methicol IV/IM Injection

Peripheral Neuropathies:

• Usual Adult Dosage: 500 mcg of Mecobalamin
• Administration: Intramuscularly or intravenously
• Frequency: Three times a week
• Dosage Adjustment: The dosage should be adjusted based on the age of the patient and the severity of symptoms.

Megaloblastic Anemia:

• Usual Adult Dosage: 500 mcg of Mecobalamin
• Administration: Intramuscularly or intravenously
• Frequency: Three times a week initially
• Maintenance Therapy: After about two months of administration, the dosage should be changed to one ampoule equivalent to 500 mcg of Mecobalamin every one to three months.

Interaction

Decreased GI tract absorption with neomycin, aminosalicylic acid, H2-blockers, and colchicine. Reduced serum concentrations with oral contraceptives. Reduced effects in anemia with parenteral chloramphenicol.
